I recently encountered a SharerPoint_Config database reaching 29 GB and exhausting the server's free space. Specifically, SharePoint_Config_log.LDF transaction logs continue growing until, for example, a full farm backup automatically optimises the database.
One-off procedure to shrink SharePoint_Config:
- Open SQL Server Management Studio and connect to the SQL server
- First perform a full SharePoint_Config backup – important!
- Change the database recovery model to Simple (right-click SharePoint_Config, then Properties -> Options -> Recovery model: Simple)
- Open a new query, enter and execute: DBCC SHRINKFILE(‘Sharepoint_Config_Log’,1) Check that the database size has been reduced automatically.
- Change the recovery model back to Full (right-click SharePoint_Config, then Properties -> Options -> Recovery model: Full). In my case, the database shrank from 29 GB to 1 MB. I hope this helps you too.
Procedure when regular backups are not possible
- Using SQL Management Studio, set the database to Simpl Recovery Mode.
