With Windows 8 and the new Hyper-V, I could not resist finally converting my work PC into a virtual machine. A unified workstation that could easily move to another PC after hardware failure was very appealing.
Joomla 2.5 is here!
To my surprise, a third new Joomla edition, 2.5, has arrived.
Officially, Joomla 2.5 is the real successor to 1.5, so let us treat 1.6 and 1.7 as the "Windows Vista" releases 🙂
TRIM support for SSDs
SSDs introduced fast reads and writes compared with HDDs, but quickly showed considerable performance degradation after short use. Existing operating systems did not work correctly with SSD controllers: instead of writing zeroes to empty blocks, they marked whole blocks as deleted. Because SSDs write blocks of a fixed size, this meant reading the area again, modifying it (writing zeroes), then writing the data.
Joomla 1.5.x – showing only the date in Created Date
To display only a date in articles or section/category blog views (normally the creation date and time appear), make this code change.
Joomla 1.5.22 – incorrect article ordering in a section
Joomla 1.5.22 has a bug causing incorrect article ordering in section blog view. Until a new version is available, use this workaround:
IIS7 and 32-bit applications
Enable support for 32-bit applications directly on the relevant IIS7 application pool.
Fixing history display for text fields
If you customised a list in SharePoint Designer with text fields using Append Changes to Existing Text, their history stopped appearing.
Installing SharePoint Services 3 on Server 2008
Prepare Server 2008 before installing Microsoft SharePoint Services 3
Installing WSUS 3 on an RODC
If you try to install WSUS on an RODC, installation ends in an error. The RODC lacks a writable AD database, preventing creation of the groups needed first by the WSUS internal SQL database and then by WSUS itself.
Configuring an external time source for Network Time Protocol (NTP)
Each domain structure has one AD server holding the relevant FSMO role, specifically the (PDC) emulator, responsible for time synchronisation throughout AD. The AD server holding the (PDC) emulatorrole is at the top of the DC hierarchy and cannot synchronise time with itself. Its default source is time.windows.com. Unfortunately, this source is often unavailable due to overload, so I recommend another source, such as tik.cesnet.cz
