SharePoint Server 2016 and SharePoint Server 2019 have reached the end of support. If you want to keep running SharePoint in your own infrastructure with Microsoft support, the only path is to move to SharePoint Server Subscription Edition.
End of support as of July 2026: what next?
Microsoft lists July 14, 2026 as the end-of-support date for both versions in its 2026 end-of-support overview. SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019 have therefore been out of support since July 15.
What does this mean in practice? You can continue using the product, and the end of support does not itself shut down your farm. However, Microsoft will no longer release further security fixes or bug fixes for these versions or provide technical support for them. Continuing to run them therefore carries the risk of newly discovered vulnerabilities that will remain unpatched.
August was the last CU
The latest updates listed for both versions in Microsoft’s official update history are the packages released on August 11, 2026. Their release after the end of support does not extend the product lifecycle.
This article therefore closes the regular CU announcements for SharePoint 2016 and SharePoint 2019 on this blog. Earlier posts remain available as an archive.
Where to go next
For a supported SharePoint Server deployment in your own infrastructure, the only path is SharePoint Server Subscription Edition. Microsoft continues to support this version under the Modern Lifecycle Policy. Remaining supported requires keeping up with the servicing, system and licensing requirements.
You can upgrade directly from either 2016 or 2019 using the database-attach method. First, prepare a new Subscription Edition farm, then move and upgrade the databases. Before upgrading, also check the compatibility of your custom solutions and the components you use.
Future SharePoint Server updates will be released only for Subscription Edition. I will publish their announcements on this blog under the SharePoint Subscription Edition tag.
