Datasheet view does not work with Office x64

Unfortunately, installing 64-bit Office prevents datasheet view from working in any of these SharePoint versions (SharePoint Server 2007/Services 3, SharePoint Server 2010/Foundation).

Datasheet view error

Clicking "Datasheet View" displays:

The list cannot be displayed in Datasheet view for one of these reasons:

  • A datasheet component compatible with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation is not installed.
  • The browser does not support ActiveX controls.
  • The component is not configured correctly for 32-bit or 64-bit support.

Cause

For SharePoint datasheet functionality, the OS needs "datasheet components", which Office x64 does not include.

Solution

  • Uninstall Office x64 and install Office x32.

or, a better solution:

  • Install 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components to enable 32-bit datasheet components.
