Installing WSUS 3 on an RODC

If you try to install WSUS on an RODC, installation ends in an error. The RODC lacks a writable AD database, preventing creation of the groups needed first by the WSUS internal SQL database and then by WSUS itself.

Procedure for installing WSUS 3 on an RODC

  1. Sign in to a DC with a writable AD database
  2. Create these groups:
    • SQLServer2005MSFTEUser$RODCServerName$Microsoft##SSEE
    • SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$RODCServerName$Microsoft##SSEE
    • WSUS Administrators
    • WSUS Reporters

    RODCServerName is your RODC server name

    On a Czech-language server, create:
    Správci služby WSUS
    Zpravodajové služby WSUS

  3. Wait for replication to the target RODC so the new groups are available
  4. Start RODC service installation
