Security patch MS16-004 (KB3124585) is another reason NEVER, truly NEVER, to enable automatic updates on SharePoint 2013 servers.
What happened?
On 12 January 2016, Microsoft published another security patch, MS16-004 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3114503), through Windows Update, fixing a possible remote code execution vulnerability. Users immediately reported problems displaying lists Unable to get property ‘replace’ of undefined or null reference. MS16-004 (KB3124585) changes code requiring updated language-independent and language-dependent SharePoint Foundation 2013 components. However, it includes only the language-independent component updates; the language-dependent ones were overlooked.
What can be done?
Fortunately, this story has a simple solution: install the January cumulative update (January 2013 CU), which updates both the language-independent and language-dependent SharePoint Foundation 2013 components.
If you have trouble installing the CU, Microsoft also released a fix installing only the language-dependent SharePoint Foundation 2013 components.
