Configuring an external time source for Network Time Protocol (NTP)

Each domain structure has one AD server holding the relevant FSMO role, specifically the (PDC) emulator, responsible for time synchronisation throughout AD. The AD server holding the (PDC) emulatorrole is at the top of the DC hierarchy and cannot synchronise time with itself. Its default source is time.windows.com. Unfortunately, this source is often unavailable due to overload, so I recommend another source, such as tik.cesnet.cz

Changing the external time synchronisation source from time.windows.com to tik.cesnet.cz (NTP)

  1. At the command prompt, enter w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:tik.cesnet.cz,0x8, /syncfromflags:manual /update and press ENTER.
  2. Restart Windows Time using net stop w32time & net start w32time and press ENTER.
  3. Force time synchronisation using w32tm /resync and press ENTER.

This configuration resolves Event ID: 12 Source: Microsoft-Windows-Time-Service — Domain Hierarchy Time Source Acquisition
