Updates for SharePoint Server Subscription Edition (July 2023 CU)

A new cumulative update (July 2023 CU) has been released for SharePoint Server Subscription Edition.

SP Build:
16.0.16130.20642

Starting with the March 2023 CU, updates for SharePoint Server Subscription Edition are released as a single package (known as an Uber package) containing both language-independent and language-dependent fixes. Only one package needs to be installed to fully update the server.

SharePoint Subscription Edition CU – KB articles describing the CU:

  • KB 5002424 – July 2023 Update for SharePoint Server Subscription Edition

After installation, remember to run the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard or the following command:

PSConfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures -cmd secureresources -cmd services -install

Important notes

To speed up CU installation, I recommend following the guidance in How to speed up CU installation in SharePoint Server Subscription Edition.

The language you select when downloading the update does not matter because the same package is downloaded for every language.

Note for this CU:

Installing this update requires the release version of SharePoint Server Subscription Edition.

Document saving and autosaving can fail, particularly with Office Online Server integration. Affected operations include saving a copy from Word, Excel or PowerPoint online to a document library, adding an item to an InfoPath Designer 2013 form library, and OneNote autosaving in a document library. To work around this problem, run the following in SharePoint Management Shell:

$farm = Get-SPFarm
$farm.ServerDebugFlags.Add(53112)
$farm.update()
iisreset

Included fixes and improvements

The following overview summarizes the fixes and improvements in this CU based on the official Microsoft KB articles.

SharePoint Server Subscription Edition

This CU addresses remote code execution, spoofing and security feature bypass vulnerabilities: CVE-2023-33134, CVE-2023-33157, CVE-2023-33159, CVE-2023-33160, CVE-2023-33165.

The unified update in KB 5002424 includes these SharePoint Server Subscription Edition changes:

  • Fixes an issue where, after KB5002390 is installed, farm solution updates or retractions are slow when the farm service account belongs to the local Administrators group; application pools may also stay stopped after completion.

  • Fixes an issue where non-SharePoint application pools hosting 32-bit applications on SharePoint servers hang when their Enable 32-Bit Applications setting is True in IIS Manager.

  • Fixes an issue where a view that omits required fields shows a yellow missing-value indicator even though those fields have values.

  • Fixes an issue where ListData.svc API calls fail for lists with a calculated column whose formula does not produce a double.

  • Updates daylight saving time rules for Egypt, Fiji, Jordan, Mexico and Uruguay.

  • Adds every web application pool account to WSS_WPG on each farm server.

  • Fixes an issue where the modern document library experience allows editing the Document ID.

  • Fixes an issue where modern page site avatars on Chinese (Simplified) sites show an abbreviated site type rather than the site title. To restore the previous behavior, run in SharePoint Management Shell:

    $farm = Get-SPFarm
    $farm.ServerDebugFlags.Add(53113)
    $farm.update()
    iisreset

  • Fixes an issue where Managed Metadata and Person columns show a term ID instead of its label.

  • Fixes an issue where the Grant Access panel covers the notification overlay.

  • Fixes an issue where newly added list item attachments appear in the modern interface only after refreshing the page.

  • Fixes an issue where access to resources across sites fails.

  • Fixes rendering issues affecting the GB18030 character set.

Fixes for other components (requirements are stated with each fix):

  • Fixes an issue in Project Server CSOM in KB 5002424 where a project cannot be assigned a project or task calendar.

  • Fixes an issue in Project Server CSOM in KB 5002424 where the project’s ScheduledFromStart property cannot be updated.
