The AD database consists of directory partitions, so replication occurs separately for each partition rather than for AD as a whole.
There are four AD database partitions:
Schema Partition
- one on each DC
- describes the object types that can be stored in AD (the schema version used)
- replicates within every domain in the forest
Configuration Partition
- one on each DC
- stores the replication topology
- replicates within every domain in the forest
Domain Partition
- one on each DC, partly replicated to the GC
- describes objects belonging to that domain
- replicates within the relevant domain
Application Partition
this partition is optional, so AD may contain none or several. It stores information for other applications, such as DNS (installing DNS creates two application partitions: the domain-wide DNS application partition and the forest-wide DNS application partition)
- can store almost anything
- replicates to any subset of DCs in the forest
